The Shower

It is the one thing most, if not all of us have in common. We wash ourselves to cleanse away the day. Some showers are mandatory while others serve as a space in time for us to escape and refresh our minds. In return, showers are so different for so many people. Now I bet you are wondering where the hell is she going with this crazy shower rant. Well as I sat in the shower last night, I cultivated this concept. This concept of how alone we are at that moment with the water trickling down our skin, lavished in bubbles and enlightening our senses all at once. The fragrance of that alleviating lavender vanilla Lush soap. Or the coarse yet gentle stroke of the loofa contacting your birthday suit. Or what about that sound, the sound of water stampeding everywhere, hitting different things all around you and making a combination of melodies as it falls in unison, only to regather itself and leave to another place.

I found myself thinking about all the meaningful showers I’ve had. Ones where I could not get my hair wet because I had just got it done at the salon and I wanted to maintain its freshness at every cost. I thought of the shower when I was in my senior year of college and I did not know where life was going after graduation, but while in that shower I  always be inspired by what I love and care about the most. I vaguely, yet wholeheartedly remember the shower when I felt my absolute worst, life just wasn’t going as planned that day. So unhinged and rattled by my migraine that I sat on the floor with the cold tub rim supporting the back of my neck sending painful yet soothing jolts of numbness throughout my body. Why not take a bath? Because that liquid cloak sounded horrible compared to an unchoreographed dance at the time.

It dawned on me that this is the place of rebirth. The place of ideas. The ultimate place of comfort. A place to escape. It is the destination in which we journey to and know exactly what we want and what we are going to get from it. This place is a constant in our lives. We are told that we are 60% water and in return gives us a special bond with this natural liquid– but the shower is more much than that.
