Must... Have... Shoes.
There has been this age old question when it comes to footwear– What is the addiction?
I can remember being 6 or 7 years old when I first realized there was a slippery slope I was sliding down. It lead me right to my feet. By the time I was 9 I had at least 20 pairs of shoes, all varieties. I would con my grandma into thinking that my foot was growing like crazy so I could get a new pair of converse or cowboy boots. Now before you hate me for that, this is the addiction speaking truthfully.
We see movies by Spike Lee & Justin Tipping that bring us into the true culture of kicks. Why is it that the youth, especially those growing up with barely any food on the table still find the drive and need to have the latest pair of Nikes or Adidas? It's a concept that I have personally struggled with and still struggle with today.
I used to have 35 pairs of Jordans at one time and my boyfriend is still urging me to get rid of the last 15. Something in me keeps telling me don't listen to him, it honestly has me feeling a bit like Gollum for the Lord of the Rings. Don't worry though– I'm not in my closet petting my kicks saying "my precious". Jesus.
Really though, what is the addiction we see here? I pose this question just as a thought bubble that may or may not one day find an answer. As of now I see these never ending shoe addictions as being the forefront to subconscious battles we deal with. When you have a fresh pair or kicks, Dr.Martens, Louie V's or whatever your poison is, there has gotta be some kind of dopamine release happening here...
